Central Avenue's 2019 Window Painting Contest Winners



Jersey City, NJ – The Central Avenue Special Improvement District Management Corporation, in partnership with the Jersey City Board of Education is pleased to announce the twenty (20) winners for the fifth annual Heights Halloween Window Painting Contest on Central Avenue. A short award ceremony to recognize the winners was held on Wednesday, October 30, 2019 at Carolina Rosa Arts Academy (336 Central Ave) where the winning artwork was on display (in photograph form) during the ceremony joined by students, parents, and educators.

The twenty winners were selected based on the categories of fall season, humor, content, and overall composition per grade level. Sixteen (16) grammar/ elementary schools citywide participated with representatives in grades 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8th. In total, there were 153 Halloween portraits painted on nearly 90 Central Avenue storefronts. The panel of contest judges include Jersey City Councilman Ward D, Michael Yun; Artist Kristin DeAngelis who owns and operates 107 Bowers Gallery and Artspace; ChicpeaJC blogger Lynn Hazzan; and Joseph Nachbaur, State Farm Insurance/ CASID Vice-President (S).

“We congratulate the twenty winners and thank all of the students for sharing their artistic skills with the community,” says Sanford Fishman, CASID President and longtime pharmacist at Bond Drugs. “For most of them, this is their first public art installation experience. Central Avenue businesses are happy to be part of that and keep this annual tradition in our neighborhood as we look forward to growing it next year. The educators in the Jersey City Visual Arts department do a fantastic job getting the kids ready for this unique experience and residents really enjoy the festive artwork.”

Winners received prize ribbons, citations from the City courtesy of Councilman Michael Yun, and a variety of gifts generously donated by Central Avenue businesses coming to a combined value of about $1,400. Business sponsors included Novick Hardware (302 Central); Joe Nachbaur, State Farm Agent (505 Central); Renato’s Pizza Masters (278 Central); Gino’s Restaurant (380 Central); Dulce De Leche Bakery (376 Central); Los Tres Chilitos (458 Central); Raquel Nails (382 Central); Eye Contact Vision Center (368 Central); Paulie’s Brickhouse (264 Central); Jang Stare Taekwondo (299 Central); Family Fitness Karate & Kickboxing (419 Central); and Hulu’s Phone Accessories (430 Central).

Trick-or-treaters of all ages along Central Avenue will get to enjoy the artwork while they trick-or-treat. Storefront windows will be cleaned, and portraits removed starting on Friday, November 1st.
